There was even a trophy for resting for ten minutes. In fact, it encouraged the player to take their time and explore everything the beautiful game had to offer. Playing The Pathless on PC or PS4 will still get players a decent open-world gaming experience, but anyone interested in the game would honestly be doing themselves a disservice if they play anything other than the PS5 version.Remember when Flower released for the PlayStation 3, and it was mind-blowing just for how relaxing it was? It didn’t rush the player through the levels. The Pathless utilizes the DualSense controller's adaptive triggers to replicate the feeling of pulling on a bowstring, and while it may not seem like a big deal, those that have experienced the PS5 controller know things like haptic feedback and adaptive triggers can make a world of difference. The player character zipping across the map at top speed without any kind of pop-in or draw distance problems is super impressive, and shows how games that aren't necessarily trying to reach new graphical benchmarks can still leverage the power of next-generation technology with great results.īesides looking great, The Pathless takes advantage of the PlayStation 5's unique capabilities in other ways as well. It's not chasing the hyper-detailed textures of other PS5 launch titles like Demon's Souls or Godfall, but it runs incredibly smooth, with a gorgeous art style that looks like a cross between cel-shaded graphics and a Disney animated movie. While Spirit Vision is hard on the eyes, The Pathless otherwise looks fantastic. The Pathless' boss battles are a real highlight of the experience, so it's a shame there's only a handful of them to complete. There's no real "dying" in The Pathless and not much consequence to getting hit, but the boss battles are still intense and exciting thanks to how action-packed they are, especially when compared to the somewhat relaxing mood the rest of the game has. Luckily, each boss fight in The Pathless is different from the rest, and they are genuinely fun. There are slight variations depending on the boss, but it's more the same than it is different, and like with the stealth sections, becomes a chore by the end of the game.Īfter players successfully hunt down a boss in The Pathless, the next step is to have a proper boss fight. Each boss has eyes on the sides of its body that players need to hit with arrows, all the while avoiding fireballs and other hazards. After players have successfully cleansed the three towers in an area, they have to head to the red vortex and chase down the boss. Hunting down the bosses is also the same each time. While the way the bosses move changes and some of the terrain is different, these sections more or less play out exactly the same each time, so they become an inconvenience keeping players from enjoying the better parts of the game rather than a fun challenge. One of the biggest examples of this is the stealth sequences, where periodically players are sucked into the boss's red vortex and have to retrieve the Hunter's eagle, all the while trying to avoid being caught. Unfortunately, there's a lot about The Pathless that's repetitive, with some of the content or design choices coming across as padding to artificially extend the game's playtime. The only downside is that there's only a handful of puzzle types for players to encounter, which can get repetitive by the end. The Pathless' puzzles aren't overwhelming and players don't have to even complete all of them to reach the end of the game. Some puzzles require players to utilize the eagle's ability to carry objects, whereas other puzzles are about pulling off creative trick shots to light torches. The Pathless' puzzles never get too complicated, but many of them are still fun and rewarding to complete.

Use Data Merge and let InDesign do all of the hard work for you! The data source file contains the information that varies in each iteration of the target document, such as the names and addresses of the recipients of a form letter.A data source file is made up of fields and records. Seems like a lot of work for so few entries, but maybe it would help for long projects. This extremely useful when working with a template in Indesign (i.e a business card) where each version needs slightly different information. All you need for data merge is a data source file and a target document. If your images are pre-sorted by your darker/lighter test, you could put their respective text in different columns in your data file and possibly use the Remove Blank Lines feature and style sheets. This function can be used to create hundreds of variations upon mailing address labels, employee business cards, and anything else with a predetermined design and variable content. Tanks alotĮach house has one specialist unit that becomes available in the later missions and each unit either reflects its house or the original story. Enemy AI unforgivably fling wave upon wave of mixed unit attacks meaning that you need a good range of anti-infantry and anti-tank defence. You’re often fighting against more than one house, plus mercenaries or Fremen. Playing through the game on ‘hard’ actually gets quite tough by the fourth or fifth mission. Much like Dune II and even Command & Conquer, around the fourth mission you’ll find your base strewn with your own badly damaged light vehicles-simply because it’s the last mission before you’re allowed to build a repair bay. They’re really just the same as your chaps but dressed in purple beekeeper outfits for added drama. Finally of course is the Emperor and his ruthless Sardukar warriors. The native Fremen warriors make a return too, living in caves amongst the rocky outcrops and ambushing enemies out of the blue. Dune 2000 also introduces smugglers and mercenaries, some of which you’re allied with and who will abandon you mid-mission if they become overrun. Much like Dune II, there’s a third house called Ordos, derived from the book’s Spacing Guild, in addition to the Atreides and Harkonnen. Unlike anything in early Command & Conquer, the Starport works almost like a marketplace, where stock runs dry and where prices fluctuate. Sadly there’s no way to queue unit production as in Tiberian Sun, but once the tech tree lets you build a Starport you can receive dozens of units at a time, making this real tank-rush territory. You can select and move multiple groups of vehicles and assign numerical shortcuts to groups. In terms of mechanics, it’s pretty much identical to the original Command & Conquer. I notice early on that many of the vehicles such as harvesters and trikes take a form much more akin to the movie than in Dune II, and that’s also true in the FMV sequences. My screen resolution for the first mission is so high that I find the corners of the map with a couple of infantry then realise the mission area is basically just a box in the middle of the screen. It’s classic Command & Conquer movie territory, complete with a tiny set, about three extras and a terrible green screened desert backdrop.Īs the game begins the first thing I notice is that the unit animations aren’t quite as polished as C&C, and there are fewer frames when the units move. Playing the role of mentat to house Atreides, he delivers a brilliant piece of oratory during one of the early FMV sequences, proclaiming that “Harkonnen would rather drink your blood than their own mother’s milk”. I’m drawn to play as house Atreides, not because they’re noble heroes who liberate the oppressed natives, but because I want to see John Rhys-Davies’ beard. The game begins with an introduction to the story by Bene Gesserit concubine Lady Elara-basically a bald witch with a detachable poisonous fingernail. The icing on the cake is it still includes all three sets of ludicrous full motion video sequences from each of the playable houses. It’s available to play in just moments, and at about four times its original resolution. Gruntmods has done a fantastic job of making it easy to set up. While Dune 2000 isn’t available through digital stores, you can download and play it for free courtesy of the legally murky Dune 2000: Gruntmods Edition. Back in 1998 Dune 2000 was little more than a revamp of Dune II, but to be able to easily revisit that universe today that’s exactly what I needed. How was it going to look on a 4K monitor? Would I be better off trying to play it on a calculator? Would I really get any satisfaction out of finishing a mission without a badly acted FMV sequence at the end? Could I even be arsed to try and get a 25-year-old game to work on a modern PC?ĭune 2000 was the solution. I’d forgotten how laborious the mechanics must have been-having to select each unit individually and manually select ‘move’ or ‘attack’. Sadly, after viewing a couple of YouTube videos I was instantly put off. I recently watched the movie again, which got me thinking I’d love to delve back into Dune’s strange universe and perhaps replay Dune II. So why is Dune 2000 worth playing today? Let’s find out. To successfully implement this tactic, you need disciplined players who are willing to fight for the team and battle for every ball. With the three midfielders lying right in front of the centrebacks and the lone striker putting pressure on the opponent's midfielders, it then makes it very difficult for the opposition to score. This allows the two full-backs to tuck in alongside the centrebacks and the two wingers drop in to either side of them, effectively creating a back six. Teams usually line up in a 4-5-1 if they are looking to use this tactic. You allow them to play in front of your defence and low-lying midfield, only engaging when they come too near or venture into dangerous positions. The idea behind this style of play is to limit the space and time your opponents have on the ball. While this sacrifices their own attacking outlet and gives their opponents the initiative, it can be a very useful tactic to use if you are looking to keep a clean sheet or protect a lead in a match. When teams park the bus, they pull everyone back and try to limit the opposition to as few opportunities as possible. One of the soccer tactics Jose Mourinho used to line up against Pep Guardiola's teams was to "park the bus" and hope to hit them on the counter. This is because coaches have set their teams up to either defend deep and attack on the counter, or press high in the hopes of winning the ball back in a more dangerous area. While it was very much in vogue a few years ago, recent tactical innovations have seen it decline in popularity. When it doesn't, it can be very frustrating for the players if their coach keeps demanding they replicate a style of play when they are just not able to. When it works, Tiki-Taka can be an absolute delight to watch. The keeper, too, should be quick off their line to sweep behind the high line defence, and also be adept at passing the ball around confidently. Your defenders should also be good on the ball and at times push up into midfield or overlap past the winger on the flanks. The key to this tactic is creativity, technical skills, and fluidity.Īs well as the right personnel to play it, of course. Their role is to stretch the opposition, make intelligent runs, and drag the opponent's defenders out of position. In addition to the technical and creative midfielders this system demands, you also need intelligent and agile forwards. Tiki-Taka involves keeping possession using short passes with all players constantly on the move - interchanging positions and overloading the opposition's midfield. While Tiki-Taka has its origins in the Dutch team of the 70s, it was Pep Guardiola's Barcelona team of 2008 – 2012 that made this style of play famous around the world. In addition, it also improves the players' tactical knowledge and understanding of the game.Ĭheck out the link below for an in-depth guide on the most common formations: While many teams stick to just one over the course of the season, it’s well worth working on a couple so that you can vary things up depending on your opposition. Once you have had a think about the players at your disposal and how you want the team to play, you can then start coaching the formation in your training sessions. Similarly, it’s very hard to make a single striker system work if you don't have the right player up front to slot the ball in the back of the net. Understanding each formation allows you to select the one that best suits your squad.įor example, it’s no good forcing your players to play a 3-5-2 if you don't have the right type of players to fill in on the flanks. While some formations allow you to dominate possession or overwhelm the opposition on the wings, others are more defensive and counter attacking in nature. Knowing the strengths and weaknesses of each formation will go a long way to deciding what you and your players do as a team and what tactics you use. Before looking at various advanced soccer tactics you can implement as a coach, one of the most important tactical decisions you need to decide on is which formation you’ll use. And if I’m designing a puzzle I think, “Well, what do I need for this puzzle?” I need a light bulb, I need a pulley - whatever, and then I would try and design stranger puzzles with stranger parts.īut let’s say I’ve got a puzzle that involves a parade of circus elephants that has to be visually exciting and strange to look at, but then if I haven’t thought about how that scene makes sense in the story I’ve got a big problem. And I think that is charming in the short run, but that as you get further into a story and you see more and more disconnected images, you begin to suspect that there’s nothing holding it all together. What drove you to that initial design process if you changed in the middle of things?Įarly on, when I made the demo, people responded to the sort of, like, dreamlike, surreal imagery, and so, in a way, that was like being rewarded for putting a lot of strange disconnected images in a game. People too often get attached to something because parts of it are great or because of the time they put into it, and it stays in, and it’s a mistake. I don’t regret having to throw out content I wish the process didn’t take so long, but cutting something, even if you put a ton of time into it, is often the right move. I’ve always felt that - coming from a background in software engineering - if you’re writing code, one of the best feelings you can have is to cut a big chunk of code out because you’ve redesigned so that it’s not necessary. So at some point, I said, “this whole structure of the chapter was wrongheaded,” even though I’d dumped a ton of time into it and maybe even finished the art. You know, a story has to have a certain shape, you can’t just keep gluing extra scenes onto it. That formulation, I think, is the big thing that took me a long time.Įarly on, I would build a bunch of puzzles without thinking through what it all meant narratively, and I had all these moments and scenes that didn’t work in the story. So they’re in conflict and that has to be carefully balanced and resolved for each moment in the game. But more puzzles with more pieces forces more scenes into the story or forces me to try and cram more objects into one scene, and that means the needs of the story and the needs of the puzzle design push against each other. You don’t ever want to have two scenes that serve the same purpose.īut when I’m trying to design a puzzle, I want as many puzzles as I can get, and I want each puzzle to have as many pieces as it possibly can as the game goes on. And when you’re telling a story, there’s a principle of a narrative economy where you want to use as few scenes to tell a story as you possibly can. The pieces of the puzzle are parts of scenes within the world, and so first I’d come up with a puzzle design, and then I’d have to figure out how to kind of organically justify or integrate the parts of the puzzle into the story. Maybe I could have sat down and planned parts of the game better, or maybe I needed to build stuff that doesn’t work in order to see that it doesn’t work. Buried Signal You cut out entire chunks of the game? They didn’t make sense within the story, so the stories began to feel like a bunch of disconnected imagery, and that’s not satisfying for a player as they get deeper into the game.Īll four tiles are puzzles on their own, and the whole thing is a puzzle as well. I had a bunch of puzzles made, and the puzzles were kind of cool, but the scenes making up the puzzle didn’t make any sense within the world of the game. And that’s why over the course of the game I built big chunks of content and then whole chapters that I ended up throwing out because the balance was off. Game design is more like a confusing headache for a long time until everything kind of clicks together, and then it feels good.īut trying to design a puzzle game where every piece of each puzzle is also a scene in a story - it took me a long time to figure out how to balance all the constraints. I like doing art, and sometimes visual design is challenging, but it’s fun. The most difficult parts were the art and the game design. The design, technologically in terms of coding, is not all that complicated. What would you say was the most difficult aspect of doing all of that yourself? I have a sound designer and a composer, but I did all the game design and all the art. My understanding is that you’re the sole designer on the game?
